Would you leave the doors to your house open for anyone to enter? In the exact same sense, you shouldn’t leave the doors (ports) open to your computer to any unauthorized device, especially if you don’t have any monitoring system in place to detect such access. Or else, it will only be a matter of time before someone breaks in.

Blocking unauthorized access to unauthorized devices is one of the most basic security mechanisms that you should put to use.

Securing your computer from unauthorized access through your computer’s ports is much more complicated and there are a lot of things you need to know and do if you were to do it manually.

You should remember that there are individual ‘plugs’ in your computer known as ports. In the event when someone gains access to your computer, one of the ports will surely be the way in.

To start off immediately blocking access to unauthorized devices to your computer, it is highly recommended to install a port blocking utility. These programs allow monitoring of all attempts to access your computer through one of the ports and list all the external devices that make those attempts. With thousands of new software vulnerabilities being discovered each year, you wouldn’t want to be just another statistic in the long list of victims of such vulnerabilities.

The application can also help you monitor unauthorized attempts by logging details of access attempts. Internal risk within organizations is always present and has been observed as a fact in many past and recent data breach incidents.

Blocking unauthorized access attempts and the resulting attacks from external devices can be properly implemented using the right combination of access control and list management. Consider the device blocking application as a middle-man ready to perform the actions necessary to keep you computer safe. The device will also block unauthorized access.

The program should then prevent your data from being leaked out to USB drives, external drives, CDs, DVDs and other such storage devices. It blocks all such types of storage devices from accessing your data and in this way it prevents illegal copying, duplication, stealing and leakage of your data. And every time an unauthorized USB drive, external drive, CD, DVD, floppy disk or any such storage device tries to access your computer, the program should request for a password or passphrase. Access to such devices will only be allowed if a valid password/passphrase is entered. The program can also block network computers and non-system drives. The program should not allow any unauthorized device to access your computer unless a valid password is entered or you’ve added it to your Authorize List.

The following is a checklist of the most common features of a device blocking application:

  • Effortless Security
  • Automatic Protection
